Others say avoid failure when and where you can.<\/p>\n<p>Both perspectives are valuable. But there is a meaningful balance in between.<\/p>\n<p>Taking calculated risks means looking at the potential consequences of risky behavior and accounting for all possible downsides before taking the action. If the potential upsides outweigh the potential risks, then it\u2019s well worth exploring the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>If you take no risks, you\u2019re at risk of stagnating. Sure, risks don\u2019t always pan out. You might end up disappointing a client or losing some money. Many undesirable things can come from risk taking. But you will learn something valuable from the experience every time, and it can lead to valuable breakthroughs too.<\/p>\n<p>If the risk pays off \u2013 it\u2019s time to pop the champagne!<\/p>\n<h2>Expand Your Strengths<\/h2>\n<p>Leadership expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxwellleadership.com\/\">John C. Maxwell<\/a> hammers home the idea that working on your weaknesses isn\u2019t of much value. The only problem? We can get complacent constantly working in our strengths!<\/p>\n<p>So, here are some worthwhile ideas on how to expand your strengths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you speak two languages already, try learning a third.<\/li>\n<li>If you play one musical instrument, begin learning another.<\/li>\n<li>If you\u2019re confident expressing yourself in the written word, try your hand at public speaking.<\/li>\n<li>If you know your way around WordPress, study how to use a new WordPress theme, or learn how to use another Content Management System (CMS).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Customize this list to yourself. What are your strengths? What opportunities are there to expand them? Explore all possible, worthwhile vignettes.<\/p>\n<h2>Take a Course<\/h2>\n<p>There are plenty of courses out there, and if you\u2019re an ambitious individual, there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ve engaged in your share of home study programs already.<\/p>\n<p>But it may be time to try a different kind of course \u2013 one that <em>isn\u2019t<\/em> in the purely self-directed, take it at your own pace, from the comfort of your own home vein.<\/p>\n<p>Get involved in a program that challenges you \u2013 one where you\u2019re responsible for the success of others, where you must be accountable for your own performance, where you must be in communication with others in the program.<\/p>\n<p>These programs will stretch you in ways not even expected.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>We often assume that growth only comes from doing more, but don\u2019t ignore the growth that comes from saying \u201cno,\u201d choosing to take breaks when you usually work, taking the occasional Monday off to head out to the mountains, pursuing romantic relationships, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Too much personal development can lead to stagnation too. When you don\u2019t have variety in life, you may not grow in the ways you need.
